New Patient Consultation & Examination
If it’s been five years, ten, twenty, or longer since you’ve seen a dentist, you’re not alone, and you won’t find any judgement here. We see people coming back to dental care after long gaps all the time, for all kinds of reasons. Our only goal at your first visit is to understand where you’re at and make the next step easy.
A full hour, just for you
Your first appointment is booked for a full hour. There’s no rushing through it. We use that time to properly get to know you — your dental history, what’s brought you in now, and what matters to you going forward.
We’ll also ask about any anxieties or phobias you might have, and any past dental experiences that didn’t go well. The more you’re able to tell us, the better we can tailor your visit around you. Nothing you share will be met with judgement — we’ve heard it all, and we’re here to make sure this visit is different.
Making the experience easier
We know dentistry has a reputation, often earned decades ago, and we work hard to change that. Every room has a ceiling-mounted TV with Netflix, so you’ve got something to focus on other than the treatment. We can also offer you a blanket, noise-cancelling headphones, or a stress ball if it helps you feel more settled.
For dental anxiety, we start with simple things — clear communication and reassurance every step of the way, explaining what we’re doing before we do it. If you need more support than that, we also offer nitrous oxide (happy gas) and IV sedation.
Your examination
Once you’re comfortable, your dentist will carry out a full assessment, looking at:
- Your teeth and how they bite together
- Any existing restorations — fillings, crowns, veneers, and similar work
- The health of your gums and the bone supporting your teeth
- Your tongue, throat, cheeks, and lips, checking for signs of oral cancer
- Your jaw joint
We’ll take dental X-rays (smaller ones and full mouth) as needed to check for decay between or inside teeth, any abscesses or cysts, root positions, and bone loss. We also take a full set of photographs at this visit, giving us a complete record of your teeth as they are now. That record means we can always look back and track any changes — wear, damage, or anything new — at future visits.
For more detailed cases, we have our own 3D X-ray (CBCT) machine on site. This used to mean a referral to Wellington — now it’s done here, at your appointment. We work alongside specialists where it genuinely benefits you, but we take pride in being able to provide the great majority of your treatment ourselves, from diagnosis through to the work itself.
Your treatment plan, with no surprises
Once the examination is complete, your dentist will talk you through what they’ve found in plain terms, with the options available to you, along with the benefits and risks of each.
Before you leave, you’ll receive a printed estimate covering all proposed treatment, including any planning fees, so you know the full cost upfront. No surprises — just clarity, so you can make the decision that’s right for you and your timeline.
All our dental rooms have Netflix for you to enjoy during your treatment
Ongoing check-ups
Once you’re an established patient, we recommend minimum annual examination, though this can be more frequent if you have gum disease or a weakened immune system. At each visit we’ll ask about any changes since your last appointment, review your medications, and take X-rays roughly every 12 months, or sooner if clinically needed. If anything requires further treatment, you’ll get the same clear plan and upfront estimate as your first visit.
